MCOP provides free English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction for adults eager to improve their English skills. This service relies upon volunteers who work one-on-one with English language learners or in a class setting. Tutors do not need to learn or know how to speak Spanish, but we do ask that they make a six-month commitment.
Each ESL Volunteer Tutor completes a free four-hour tutor training. Following the training, tutors are assigned to a student. They meet weekly, at a mutually agreeable time and location, often in the student’s homes or at a local library or other public place.
Each tutor-student pair is assigned to a bilingual “match specialist," who helps the tutors find appropriate learning materials and answers any questions or concerns the tutor or student may have. Follow up training is available.

MCOP offers free adult ESL classes in Iowa, Grant, Richland and Lafayette counties. Each student is assigned a volunteer tutor and is expected to meet with the tutor once a week at a time and place of mutual agreement either at the student's home, a local library or a public place. We ask all students to commit to staying with the tutoring program for at least six months. Many students are interested in being matched with an English tutor; therefore, we often have a "Waiting List".
